The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
