In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
