The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
