Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
