A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
